What is Hive?

Hive Funds Limited runs a digital-first KiwiSaver platform that puts KiwiSaver tracking, goal-setting and adviser access in one app and web platform. It says it has more than 15,000 members.

What can you invest in?

The Hive KiwiSaver Scheme gives you access to four specialist fund managers: Aurora Capital, Pie Funds, Harbour Asset Management and Munro Partners. You can combine their funds into your own "Plan", or use one of two goal-based strategies that set the mix for you:

  • Aurora First Home Buyer Strategy: a fixed mix of 25% Liquidity and 75% Conservative.
  • Aurora RetirementPlus Strategy: starts at 100% Growth at age 50, moves to 50/50 Growth and Conservative by 65, and ends at 5% Growth and 95% Conservative by 80.

Hive also offers a dedicated Kids KiwiSaver product, separate from the adult scheme.

Fees

Hive's annual fund charge and buy/sell spread depend on the fund:

FundAnnual Fund Charge (est.)Buy/Sell Spread
Hive Aurora Liquidity Fund0.40% p.a.N/A
Hive Aurora Conservative Fund1.25% p.a.0.08% / 0.08%
Hive Harbour Balanced Fund1.40% p.a.0.05% / 0.06%
Hive Aurora Growth Fund1.50% p.a.0.08% / 0.08%
Hive Harbour Growth Fund1.50% p.a.0.05% / 0.06%
Hive Pie Growth Fund1.50% p.a.N/A
Hive Pie Aggressive Fund1.60% p.a.N/A
Hive Munro Global Growth Climate Leaders Fund1.60% p.a.0.15% / 0.15%
Hive Aurora Aggressive Fund1.60% p.a.0.08% / 0.08%

These fees are noticeably higher than most bank and index-fund KiwiSaver schemes. That's because the fund charge includes the servicing and advice fees paid to your financial adviser, so advice isn't billed separately. Members 18 and over also pay a flat administration fee of $3 a month ($36 a year).

The goal-based strategies cost about 1.04% p.a. for the Aurora First Home Buyer Strategy, and about 1.50% p.a. at age 50 falling to 1.26% p.a. by age 80 for the Aurora RetirementPlus Strategy.

The bottom line

Hive suits KiwiSaver members who want app-based tracking and adviser access bundled into their KiwiSaver plan, and are comfortable paying a higher fee than a typical low-cost index provider for that advice.
